“So, I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you.”
– Paulo Coelho
By far my favorite book, The Alchemist is one of those you never forget. Depending on where you are in life, Coelho’s story will mean different things. This is a book you will definitely want to read more than once! Let’s get into it…
Plot:
The Alchemist recounts a Spanish shepherd boy, Santiago, searching for his personal legend (purpose in life). This all begins with a recurring dream of a great treasure hiden in the pyramids of Egypt. Santiago encounters a mysterious king who gives him cryptic advice and sets him off on an adventure through the Mediterranean and Sahara to find the treasure from his dreams. Through his journey, Santiago learns a lot about himself and life in general. Does he find what he’s searching for, or does he find something more valuable along the way?
Thoughts:
My favorite type of book is one that can deal with serious or meaningful ideas seamlessly with a fun and interesting story. Without deeper meaning, The Alchemist is still a very good book with an interesting plot and developed characters. You can interpret however much you want into Coelho’s words and still have a fun read! Although, if you’re interested, Coelho’s interpretation of meaningfulness, love, and destiny make you really think about your own life.
I personally resonated with Santiago’s apprehensive excitement for commencing his journey, as I am about to move abroad and fulfill my own “personal legend.” I loved this book and hope you’ll give it a read!
Thanks for making it to the end of this post and if you relate to Santiago as I have, let me know in the comments!
